5/15/08 - Wildflower Time In the Roanoke Valley

Well, Spring has sprung in the Roanoke Valley, as well as surrounding counties and the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is the time of year that I break out the cameras for images of the abundant selection on native wildflowers. With the occurrence of an actual spring season this year, the wildflowers have had a chance to bloom in a longer period, allowing people like me time to enjoy their beauty. I started the season at the wildflower garden of a young lady in Franklin County on May 4, 2008. Below are 2 images from that garden.

This Wildflower is called Fire Pink (silene virginica). Found east of the Mississippi, it prefers open woods, thickets, and sandy or rocky slopes.

This Wildflower is called Vinca Minor (apocynum cannabinum). Although not a native species, it can be found in the US.
