Usually the Purple Crocus in my lawn gives me a "heads up" of the start of a new blooming season. Not long after the Purple Crocus makes the bold announcement, the Kaufmann's Tulips start to bloom. They did not bloom last year, at least not that I saw, but they are making their presence known this year. I have more blooms than I have ever had from this mystery visitor to my gardens. I usually have some Bloodroot blooming in the wildflower garden by this time of year, but my guess is that they were killed by the stomping boots of the Tree Cutting Service that was cutting down the neighbors trees. They marched through my wildflower garden without even asking, and then wondered why I was upset over a bunch of weeds. I am guessing I will have to start over again. Here are some images from my yard and the Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden.
Here are a few
images from April 2011. I shot quite a few images last year, but failed
to post them. I am not sure of the reason, but I am sure time available
probably had a bit to do with it. That is no excuse, but now I have a
lazy, snowy Sunday at my disposal, I felt now would be as good a time as
ever to catch up.
These wildflower images are from Franklin County, Floyd County, and Roanoke County. Spring has sprung with a few days of very warm temperatures and quite a bit of rain. It shows with the density of wildflowers, even though it seems that people seem intent on destroying more and more of their natural habitat. Come on, people. How many subdivisions do you really need?
I was not sure it would take, since the soil in my garden is a bit drier than they usually like, but it came up this year.
They are Trillium grandiflorum, but not normal Trillium. They are a mutated colony of Trillium that grow with green blossoms and many more than the regular three petals of the Trillium. A fellow wildflower enthusiast recommended calling them "Surprise Trillium". I agree with her, so that is what I am calling them. I find them stunning in their odd beauty, and I cannot resist the urge to image each and every one I see., Along with other wildflowers in the area, here are the Trillium from another world.
The Trillium are not in full bloom yet, and I expect it will be 4 to 7 days for the majority to break open. The Twin Leaf are fading now, but the violets, Spring Beauty, and Virginia Bluebell are out in force. I hope you like these images.

I was surprised to see the Bleeding Hearts blooming this early in the season. I guess the couple of days with temperatures in the mid-70's might have jump started their blooming cycle. Either way, I am glad to see them. My Kaufmann's Tulips have not bloomed yet. I am concerned.
These images were taken in my neighborhood. Of course, since they have decided to live near me, I give them the honors of being the first images of spring for me. Some of the images were taken at the offices of the Roanoke Valley Garden Club.
These image were taken in Green Hill Park in west Roanoke County. This area has quite a few Bloodroot wildflowers growing, and since Bloodroot is one of my favorites, I did spend a bit of time here shooting. I also was talking to a nice young family that has just moved into the area from Montana. I hope they enjoy the wildflowers as much as I do.
A warm late winter got them going in the first week in March, but it is looking like we will have a short cold snap this weekend. I hope the early bloomers are able to survive the surprise. Crocus, Vinca minor, Corn Speedwell, and others are braving the chilly nights to get an early start on the spring exposition. Here are some images from the first week in March from the wildflower garden in Franklin County and on Mill Mountain.
It is starting into wildflower season. I have already shot some images for 2011 at a wildflower garden in Franklin County. The early Crocus and Snowdrops are starting to bloom. The Forsythia in my front yard is taking an early stretch, but the grass is still brown, which keeps me from mowing it for a while longer.

I wanted to let viewers of this blog know about the Orchid Show for the Blue Ridge Orchid Society. It is going to be held on Friday, March 11th, Saturday, March 12th, and Sunday, March 13th, 2011 at Greenbrier Nurseries on Starkey Road in SW Roanoke County. I know that Orchids are not wildflowers, but this show should not be missed. The variety and beauty of these flowers is incredible, and to have so many in one place is not to be missed. So check it out. I might see you there. Thanks to Dr. Nancy Cowden of Lynchburg College for tipping me off to this show. I appreciate the "heads up", Nancy.
Michael Overackerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06135711775802234478noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6679179184079607008.post-44793030300692025542011-02-15T21:42:00.000-08:002011-02-15T21:54:24.993-08:00Images from July 2009After finishing up my primary images from 2010, I remembered a day the previous year when I photographed some Turk's Cap Lily, but I had not posted those images. As many who know me well can tell you, I spent quite a bit of the Fall riding my new Trek Bicycle along the Roanoke River Greenway. Needless to say, quite a few of these images were taken along the Greenway. Beside the fact that the fall crisp, cool air is great for bike riding, the dark blue skies are terrific for some wider angle wildflower shots. I hope you like the last of the images for 2010.
I decided to take a day and travel the backroads of Montgomery and Floyd counties before heading out to see if my favorite wildflower, the Gray's Lily, was in bloom. I found a very nice area of a wide assortment of wildflowers along one back road, and spent a bit of time in that area. Then it was time to check on the lily. It was in bloom and this year I was able to photograph it in its prime glory. Unfortunately, some bugs had already gotten to the blooms and had eaten away at them. However, this extremely rare and beautiful wildflower is still worth every bit of effort.
